The South of France - the Languedoc 

The Languedoc covers the coastal area of the south of France from Perpignan (close to the Spanish border) up to Montpellier, and inland to Nimes and the Massif Central (inland mountain area). It's an area in southern France known for its beautiful beaches, hot sunny weather, and rich history. Being on the Mediterranean Sea, it's popular from visitors from the UK and all over Europe, but perhaps quieter and a little less well known than it's glizty neighbour, the Côte d'Azur. The region is  home to a number of great places to visit, including the medieval city of Carcassonne, the Roman ruins of Nimes, and the Cathar castles of the Pyrenees Mountains. 

The South of France - the Cote d'Azur

When most people think of the Mediterranean and the Côte d'Azur, they think of the super fashionable towns of Nice, Cannes and St Tropez. These towns are definitely worth a visit, but don't forget the other pretty seaside resorts an also the area inland, which rises up steeply and famous for small towns like Grasse, where perfume is made.  The region is also home to a number of historical sites, such as the Roman ruins of Fréjus and the medieval village of Èze.

How to get to Southern France

The two main ways to travel to the south of France is to drive, via Dover - Calais or to fly and either hire a car when you are there or stay in a campsite within an easy distance of the airport.  

Driving to the south of France

There are various different operators including P & O Ferries and DFDS Seaways who operate the shortest channel crossing routes from Dover to Calais or Dover to Dunkirk, plus Eurotunnel which operates from Dover to Calais, which then allow you to drive straight down the motorways to the south of France.

It can take between eight to twelve hours to drive, depending on where you are going. The great thing about driving in France is the easy motorways, which generally allow a comfortable cruise down without the masses of traffic that can burden the UK roads.
