Welcome to the Rhone Alps

Named after the Rhone River and the Alps mountains, the Rhone Alps region in southeast France is an area of stunning natural beauty where forests, mountains and rivers meet in a balmy Mediterranean climate. It’s also home to France’s third-largest city, Lyon, famed for its history, architecture, food and wine. Siblu’s friendly Les Rives de Condrieu holiday park is an ideal base for getting to know the area.

Our Holiday Park in the Rhone Alps

Les Rives de Condrieu is one of our smaller parks, and its peaceful atmosphere is unbeatable when it comes to rest and relaxation in a stunning setting. Nestled between the lush countryside of the Rhone Alps and the Rhone River itself, the park boasts sports facilities, slides, and a pool complex with a view over the river!

Condrieu Peninsula
Les Rives de Condrieu peninsula is just 1 mile from Les Rives de Condrieu holiday park itself, and is a great place for making the most of the beautiful Rhône river. The beach is lifeguard-supervised during the summer months of July and August, which makes it an ideal place for taking a dip. There is also a local water sports centre where you can arrange a variety of activities, such as waterskiing and wake boarding. It’s also a beautiful place to explore on land. Via Rhona Cycle Path
The Via Rhona is a cycle route that runs all the way from Lake Geneva to the French Mediterranean Coast. While you might not quite be ready to tackle the whole route just yet, choosing a part of the Lyon-Valence section to explore makes for a great family adventure. There is no better way to discover the best of the beautiful Rhone Valley than by taking to two wheels: from vineyards, to orchards, to charming Roman towns, it’s the perfect opportunity to get a real sense of the region at a relaxed pace. The ViaRhona is helpfully colour-coded: green routes are perfect for families (especially with younger children) and less-experienced cyclists.

Chambery
A day trip to the beautiful city of Chambery, less than a two-hour drive from Les Rives de Condrieu, is a great option for experiencing a combination of the region’s natural and urban beauty. Chambery’s unique location, in a wide valley between two mountain ranges, means it has a stunning Alpine view. The city stretches from Le Combe de Savoie vineyards to Lac de Bourget, France’s largest natural lake, which is worth visiting as part of your day out. Aside from its stunning setting, Chambery is a city full of fascinating history and culture. Visit the chateau, which used to be home to the Dukes of the Savoy region, get lost in the winding streets of the old town, or visit the Saturday market and enjoy the best of fresh local produce.

The Vercors offers slightly more dramatic landscapes with canyons, gorges, limestone cliffs and plateaus: if you’re after adventure you might want to check out the opportunities for climbing, canyoning, caving or paragliding.

Rhone Alps: Towns and Cities

Lyon
Despite its peaceful countryside feel, our Siblu campsite, Les Rives de Condrieu, is only 45 minutes from Lyon, the capital of the Rhone Alps region and the third-largest city in France. Lyon is well-worth exploring for its history, its architecture and its food: the winding streets of the old town are listed as a UNESCO-world heritage site and it is considered to be the ‘culinary capital’ of France. For an incredible 180 degree view out over the city and its two rivers, climb the hill up to the iconic and ornate Basilica de Notre Dame de Fourvière. Or, for a museum experience like no other, take a trip to the Museum of Confluences. This unique feat of modern architecture sits where the Rhone and the Saone rivers meets and runs a range of exhibitions merging science, history and humanities to ‘tell the story of mankind and the history of life’.

Saint-Étienne
Head west from Les Rives de Condrieu you’ll soon reach the European Capital of Design, the city of Saint-Étienne (just 27 miles from the campsite). Fans of architecture and art will be interested in exploring the town centre (famously redesigned and renovated for the 21st century) and the city’s range of museums and design centres; in particular the Cité du Design and the Museum of Art and Industry. There is also an impressive planetarium, great for curious kids.

Valence
Valence is another great Rhone Alps city to visit during your stay at the Les Rives de Condrieu holiday park. It boasts a history stretching back to Roman times, and is considered a ‘gateway’ to the South of France, due to its notably 'southern' culture. Wander along the banks of the Valence canal, discover the ruins of the Chateau de Crussol, or explore the streams, trees and playgrounds of the Jouvet and Jean-Perdix parks. The Jardin aux Oiseaux at Upie, only 20 minutes from Valence itself, is another brilliant choice for a family day out. This zoological and botanical park is home to more than 200 bird species; during a visit you can look forward to bird of prey shows, an inflatable kids’ playground, a mini-farm and a restaurant.

Vienne
Vienne, a town located at confluence of the Rhône and Gère rives, was once a major centre of the Roman Empire, and it still boasts the historical ruins and remnants to prove it. One of the most impressive is the Temple of Augustus and Livia, an amazingly well preserved example of a Roman place of worship, built sometime between 20BC and 10BC. Vienne is also famous for its Saturday market, which is one of the largest in the region. And if your Siblu holiday coincides with Vienne’s summer jazz festival, you might be lucky enough to catch international jazz legends performing in the Roman amphitheatre!
