D-Day Landing Beaches & War Cemeteries in Normandy

If you’re on holiday at our Domaine de Litteau campsite in Normandy, don’t miss the nearby beaches where British, Canadian and American armies carried out the largest military operation in history: D-Day. On 6 June, 1944, the Allies finally gained a foothold in France – a major turning point in World War II. Kids will love checking out battle remains, while the museums and monuments will help you answer all their questions…

Magical Castles in Brittany & the Loire Valley

Just a little further south – and an ideal stop-off if you’re driving down to our Brittany campsite Domaine de Kerlann – is Mont-Saint-Michel. This rocky island is home to an 11th-century abbey that seems to float in the air like a magic castle at high tide. Climb up the winding streets and see if you can find the section of the abbey nicknamed The Marvel because it’s so high and carefully balanced.

Further inland, you’ll find our Domaine de Dugny holiday park, nestled in the breathtaking Loire Valley with its famous châteaux. Here, you have hundreds of castles to explore, as well as their stunning gardens.

Lighthouses and Fortified Walls in Charente-Maritime

If you’re staying at one of our holiday parks in Charente-Maritime – La Pignade, Les Charmettes or Bonne Anse Plage – see who’s the fittest member of the family by climbing some of the lighthouses (phares in French) off its coast.

On the Ile de Ré, you can hike or cycle to the 150-year-old Phare des Baleines (Lighthouse of the Whales). You’ll have to climb 250 steps to the top but you’ll be rewarded with a fantastic view. In fact, you’ll be able to see the nearby Ile d’Oléron’s lighthouse, the Phare de Chassirons, first built in 1685 to save sailors from a treacherous stretch of water. The current building dates from 1834 and has a spiral staircase with 224 steps.

Finally, the famous town of La Rochelle, with its historic port and medieval towers, is well worth a visit.

Bonne Anse Plage on the West Coast of France is one of our most popular Siblu holiday parks thanks to its unique location (just 3km from the beach) and amazing facilities (the waterslides are particularly impressive).

Medieval Ruins & Roman History in the South of France

An unmissable day trip from our Lac des Rêves campsite in the Languedoc is to Nîmes. The kids (and older Horrible Histories fans) will love exploring the 53 watchtowers and fortifications of this medieval walled city – you can even tour a 12th-century fortress, Château Comtal!

In the region there is also the medieval town of Béziers, just a short drive from La Carabasse and Les Sables du Midi. Further along the Mediterranean coast, the region of PACA (Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur) is renowned for its perched medieval villages which appear to be built into the rock. The Roman influence looms large in the region and Fréjus, home to our Le Montourey holiday park, is even home to an amphitheatre which was built in the 1st Century.

The French Riviera offers a dramatic coastline ranging from the sandy beaches at Cannes to the stunning peninsulas of Cap d'Antibes and Saint Jean Cap Ferrat.
