Best Beaches
The West Coast of France, and Charente-Maritime in particular, is famed for its spacious sandy beaches and its opportunities for water sports. Our Charente-Maritime parks are within easy reach of a range of great beaches. The nearby La Palmyre bay is always popular with families with young children, thanks to its sheltered calm water which is great for swimming and paddling. For a wilder Atlantic Coast experience, head to the Côte Sauvage, popular with surfers for its great waves. The beach at St Palais with its many restaurants and cafés is a nice place for a stroll too, especially in the evening when the sun begins to set and you get a wonderful view of the ‘King of Lights’ the Cordouan Lighthouse.
Island Hopping
The Charente-Maritime coastline has some wonderful islands to explore. The stylish Ile de Ré is easily accessible thanks to a 3km bridge connecting it to La Rochelle. The island has over 110km of cycle paths, so hiring bikes is a great idea: cycle up an appetite exploring the beautiful forests and coastline before enjoying a picnic on the beach (or a meal at one of the snazzy restaurants). The nearby Ile d’Oléron is known for being particularly good for water sports and surfing, and also has some great sand dunes. From La Rochelle you can also get a boat to get a closer look at another famous island, the 19th century fortification Fort Boyard.
Violon sur le sable
Once a year the charming port town of Royan, near Siblu’s Bonne Anse Plage holiday park, plays host to a classical music event like no other. During ‘Un violon sur le sable’ the whole beach becomes a massive stage, with high-quality classic music and dance free for all to enjoy against the incredible backdrop of the ocean. Bring your own picnic and settle down on the sand to enjoy this unique performance under the night sky. The evening finishes with an impressive fireworks display.
Charente-Maritime: Days Out
La Rochelle
The charming port city of La Rochelle is the capital of the Charente-Maritime region and has loads for kids and adults alike to enjoy exploring. The aquarium (one of the largest and best in France) promises a fun and educational day out for all ages. For a taste of La Rochelle’s fascinating history check out the three medieval towers at the ancient harbour: the view from the top over the town and the ocean is stunning, and haunting graffiti on the walls bears witness to the sailors from all over the world who found themselves imprisoned here during various maritime conflicts over the past centuries. The port area is also host to a number of charming cafés, bars, restaurants and markets.
La Palmyre Zoo
Make sure you don’t miss out on La Palmyre Zoo during your stay at our Charente-Maritime parks. This is one of the biggest and best-known zoos in France and is home to around 110 different species. It’s also an important location for conservation of endangered species, scientific research and environmental education… over 200 baby animals are born here every year.
Luna Park and Youpi-land
Luna Park is an amusement park just 1.5 km away from Bonne Anse Plage campsite which has everything needed to keep thrill seekers of all ages happy. Dare to face the drop tower, go for a spin on the carousels or fly on the pendulum rides. Also on offer are food and drink, games, mini golf and fireworks. Just a half hour walk away from Bonne Anse Plage is Youpi-land, a real kids’ paradise: inflatable slides, ball pools, trampolines, bikes… everything here is tailored towards kids (although there is also a space for parents to relax and have a bite to eat).
